There are not many cartridges on the ammunition market that have earned more respect than the 30-06 Springfield. Introduced as a US military cartridge, this cartridge gets its name from its 30-caliber diameter, year of introduction, 1906, and original chambering in the Springfield armory M1903 service rifle. The ‘06 went on to be used in two world wars and remained in military use as late as the 1970s. Aside from its war winning capabilities, the ’06 has a reputation of being the ultimate match maker for big game animals across the world. Boasting top notch accuracy, distance, and daunting power, the ’06 is a popular choice for whitetail deer hunters across North America. With many options on the market, choosing the right 30-06 ammo can be intimidating and ultimately your choice makes an impact on your effectiveness in the woods. Read along through this buyer guide to alleviate any indecisiveness and get the most out of your next hunt.

Remington’s best-selling 30-06 cartridge is hands down our Core-Lokt 150 gr Pointed Soft Point. Nothing embodies the Remington brand more than a good old box of 30-06 Core-Lokt. This bestseller has knocked down its fair share of critters across the world and will continue to do so for some time. The Core-Lokt’s iconic controlled expansion, mid weight bullet and respectful ballistic coefficient of .339, this product won’t steer you wrong if you’re a serious whitetail hunter. To learn more about what a ballistic coefficient, check out this Remington Blog. As a matter of fact, I personally just picked up myself a box to use for this deer season.
Choosing the proper grain weight for 30-06 ammo can be challenging. For starters, a lighter bullet moves fast, is smaller, and has less momentum. Lighter bullets are ideal for longer shots due to their faster velocity and reduced drift when it contacts wind. On the other hand, a heavier bullet moves slower, is larger, can bust through brush better, and has increased momentum. Heavier bullets are ideal for shorter yardages and brushy areas, but don’t think they are not able to perform over long ranges. A happy medium between these two opposites is a 165-grain bullet. This bullet is stout enough for busting through brush, but agile enough to punch a deer at 300 yards. Check out our Core-Lokt 165 gr PSP. If you are seeking a heavier bullet weight, check out our 180 grain PSP.
When it comes to shooting long ranges, there are a few things to look for in rifle ammo. A high ballistic coefficient, a boat tail, and a ballistic tip can make a world of difference when it comes to long range. Remington’s line of Premier Long-range ammo is designed for the long-range marksman. Specifically, this Premier Long Range 30-06 cartridge shows a high coefficient of .522, a tapered boattail, and a slipstream tip, all of which improve bullet flight over distances. This cartridge is exceptional for shooting across lengthy clear cuts down south, or when chasing big country whitetail out in Montana or Kansas.
